In 2003, I moved into Clayton Hall as a first-generation college student from northeast Ohio. Early in my time at Ashland University, I met one of the most pastoral and Christ-centered individuals I’ve ever known, Dr. Don Rinehart. He truly embodied what it means to know and follow Jesus. Dr. Rinehart not only introduced me to the Brethren Church, but also took time to teach, advise, and walk alongside me during a pivotal time in my life.
Through his influence, I changed my major to Religion and began a ministry journey that led me to graduate from AU (’07) and Ashland Theological Seminary (’10). I also served at Five Stones Community Church (2008-2010). And while I learned much from the biblical studies and ministry courses taken at both institutions, I often find myself drawing from the pastoral example modeled by Rinehart years earlier.
For the past fifteen years, I have served as a youth pastor and university chaplain. Throughout that time, I often recalled Rinehart’s mentorship and example. Now, it is a joy to return to my alma mater to serve as the Executive Director of the Office of Christian Ministry and University Chaplain. My desire is to serve students, faculty, and staff in the same way that Don Rinehart once showed up for me. He pointed me to Jesus. My hope is to live into that same call. The aim is Christ.
During my first month in this role, it is a joy to see the many ways that students are growing in Christ and in community while at Ashland University. We kicked off the semester with an all-ministry worship night on Thursday, August 28th, where over 350 students came together to worship, pray, and learn more about ministry gatherings at AU. Amber LeMaster, of The Well Campus Ministry and Five Stones Community Church, served as emcee and did a wonderful job pointing students to Christ. Weekly ministry opportunities are in full swing on campus: The Well, FCA, Newman, Delight, Ratio Christi, Faith and Flow, and Bible studies. Many students are engaging with local churches, including Five Stones and Park Street Brethren Church. You can follow updates from the Office of Christian Ministry on Instagram and Facebook or the AU website.
As students reach the midpoint of the semester, I invite you to pray for them. They are navigating relationships, academic pressures, and a time of transition. Pray that they would encounter Christ daily and be surrounded by Christian mentors. And may this be true not only for our students, but also for the faculty, staff, and administration at Ashland University.
If you have questions or would like to connect, please reach out at jsumpter@ashland.edu. I look forward to keeping the Brethren Church in prayer. I would love to hear how I can be praying for you. And as always, the aim is Christ!
