One of the biggest encouragements of the past year was how quickly people wanted me to fill the Vitality Position I vacated to take the Executive Director position.  I don’t think that was as much about me being in that position as it was that many of our pastors have seen how fruitful and important, dare I say “vital,” the role is for The Brethren Church.  

It’s no secret that many of our churches and pastors are struggling.  The state of the Church in America, irrespective of denomination, can look bleak.  And it is critical that we have the right person in this ministry to continue to augment what my predecessors and I were able to build.  

The Coordinator of Vitality will continue to minister to both pastors and congregations by serving alongside the Regional Resource Coordinators, the Coordinator of Church Multiplication, and the local churches to revitalize and, where possible, reframe the ministries of our local congregations.  Many of our congregations will undergo leadership change in the next five years, many need to re-envision their role in their local community, and some will need to learn to celebrate well the life of ministry they’ve had and to ask hard questions about their legacy.  This is not easy work, nor is it always a path to popularity.  But it’s good, God-honoring, and hard work.
