As Brethren, we deeply believe in the power of partnership, and it is our joy to share the incredible stories of how God is at work through our partners around the world with you. These are not just stories of ministry; they are testimonies of how unique initiatives, like the one in the Philippines, are advancing the Gospel in powerful and culturally relevant ways. We are honored to serve alongside them and to share this story of faith, fellowship, and sports.

In June 2024, the Brethren Church of the Philippines launched a powerful and unique initiative: the Latham’s Basketball and Volleyball Tournament. What began as a simple idea for fellowship among local congregations quickly grew into a large-scale event designed to unite believers and share the Gospel with the wider community.

The journey to bring the tournament to life was filled with challenges. The organizing committee needed to secure funding for essentials like venue rentals, referees, trophies, and uniforms. The vision seemed daunting until a generous donation from Brother Matt Latham (North Georgetown Brethren Church) made it all possible. In his honor, the event was named the Latham’s Tournament.

This event quickly became more than just a competition; it became a celebration of unity, sportsmanship, and faith. It was a platform for members from different congregations to build new friendships, reconnect with one another, and witness to their community through Christ-centered sportsmanship.

This year, the tournament became even more special. For the first time, several church members stepped forward with their own donations to provide cash prizes for the winning teams. This act of generosity underscored the spirit of partnership and shared purpose within the church.

What started as a dream has now become a yearly tradition. The goal is to continue the Latham’s Tournament every year, using it as a ministry tool to deepen fellowship among congregations and to reach communities with the message of God’s love, one game at a time.

This wonderful testimony is a clear example of God’s faithfulness at work through His people. We hope this story inspires you and your congregation to see what Christ is doing globally and find new, meaningful ways to engage with your own community.
