I remember as a teenager being deeply impacted by a guest speaker at my home church, the Loree First Brethren Church in Bunker Hill, IN. I was struck by his commitment and passion for sharing God’s love with people. Although at times it was hard to follow his accent, I remember thinking that I wanted my Christian walk to be like that. After listening to him, I knew I wanted my life to make a difference in others all around the world. That guest speaker was Rev. Prasanth Kumar. It wasn’t until I had the opportunity to travel to India many years later that I truly understood all that he spoke about that day. I saw first hand the dedication that Prasanth and Nirmala Kumar have for the people and children of Rajahmundry and the surrounding towns and villages.
While on that visit in 1999 with my husband, we committed to sponsoring an orphan boy, Raj Kumar. We chose him because he was the same age as our daughter, and we felt that connection to him. Our time with him was brief, so we didn’t know a lot about him when we left, but we could never have imagined how that short visit would change him and us forever.
We were told each year we would receive a new picture of Raj Kumar, and every year we anticipated and waited anxiously for that new picture to arrive. Some years we were so disappointed when we would open that letter and realize we were receiving the exact picture we had received the year before. In 2008 while sitting at the General Conference in Richmond, VA listening to the Kumars share their work in India, I felt this nudge to volunteer to be the India partners’ coordinator, and take on the task of sending those annual updates and pictures to the U.S. sponsors.
That fall I stopped in at the National Office to pick up all they had to get me started. I thought, “Oh my, what have I gotten myself into?” With an address list and boxes of pictures, I got started. Now when those packages arrive from India it can be a bit overwhelming, and sometimes I’m not as quick to get the updates mailed out as I’d like to be, but with the help of my young friend, Isaac, we get them sent.
