Barna recently presented alarming statistics concerning pastors in the United States. According to their numbers, 42% of pastors have thought deeply about leaving their current church and the ministry. Over 50% are deeply discouraged spiritually, mentally, and emotionally, with many swiftly approaching burnout. Those leaving or thinking about leaving cite overwhelming job stress as the number one cause.
Because of these statistics and the increasing number of burned-out pastors nationally and within our movement, the Executive Board and National Office are working to help develop resources for pastors to take a Sabbatical. They're also creating resources to help churches learn why supporting their pastor with a Sabbatical is necessary.
The Sabbatical presents a financial cost, both for the pastor and the congregation. The expense mustn’t become a deterrent to allowing your pastor and congregation to explore it faithfully and courageously. Unfortunately, due to the cost, pastors have too often served for decades without this critical time to get their heads above water and breathe. The lack of a Sabbatical leads to complacent leadership, apathy, or operating from an empty well.
This year the conference offering will create a fund supporting our pastors’ practice of Sabbatical. We desire to raise $30,000 to fund ten $3,000 grants to pastors and their congregations to offset the Sabbatical expenses. Additionally, resources and materials are being created to help churches and pastors plan, prepare and better understand the benefits of a Sabbatical for their pastor.
Won’t you help us support our pastors and keep them mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually healthy?
We have marked Sunday, June 25, as a day for prayer and giving to this necessary offering. We encourage you and your church to participate.
