Significant changes are on the horizon in the Southeast Region. In the spring/summer of 2021, Grace Community Church began several shifts in staffing, including a change in pastoral leadership. Pastor Brad Reaves, who had pastored Grace Community since 2016, is no longer leading at Grace. In addition, there were other transitions as Family Ministries pastor John Nadeau and creative/tech staff member Lee Reams are both no longer on staff at Grace.
There is no delicate way to speak of tough transitions and conflict in local churches. It is hard, painful work. Grace solicited the Southeast Regional Leadership Team's assistance, as well as the help of National Coordinator of Congregational and Pastoral Vitality Miles Larson. For several months, the church has been preparing for an interim pastor doing the hard work of reconciliation and healing.
While conflict, hurt, and division are never the desired outcomes in local congregations, God has used these difficult situations to birth something beautiful out of the pain.
Brad and Andrea Reaves were able to connect with former parishioners in the Hagerstown, MD, area and have planted a new Brethren congregation there. Crossway Christian Fellowship had its first public service on September 9 and has been meeting for months prior. Members of The Brethren Church national staff and the Southeast Regional Leadership Team were able to join, and a more complete update about Crossway will be released in the coming weeks.
John Nadeau had been a member and on staff at Grace for a number of years. He has worked with youth, children, and families. With his release from Grace, John and a handful of families left Grace and began planting another church in Winchester, VA. To be clear, this was a painful split with Grace. Yet again, leadership at both churches has allowed the Holy Spirit to work in the situation, and incredible reconciliation has occurred and continues to occur.
John was in the process of pursuing full eldership in The Brethren Church as a pastor at Grace. Ordination in The Brethren Church requires the sponsorship of a local congregation, and with the split, John's ordination journey would have been halted right before the finish line was reached. Beautifully, though, healing has happened, and Grace Community Church hosted and affirmed John's ordination on Tuesday, September 28. Southeast Regional Resource Coordinator Lee Reams led the service, and Grace Community blessed the Nadeau's new ministry pastoring The Gathering Church, Virginia. You can view photos below.
The Gathering Church Virginia meets in Winchester, VA, at the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley. They have petitioned the Southeast Region for recognition as a Brethren congregation. The Southeast Regional Leadership Team is holding them in a provisional status as they get launched and continue the work of reconciliation with Grace Community. The Gathering Church Virginia will likely be presented to the floor of General Conference in 2022 for recognition as a new Brethren church.
Conflict is a natural occurrence in our congregations. Thankfully, when we use the resources available from regional leadership teams and The Brethren Church National Office, pain and division caused by conflict can be minimized, and God can work amazing things out of the situation. We rejoice in the birth of two new congregations in the Southeast Region and applaud the hard, Spirit-drenched work of Grace Community in this situation!
