First Brethren Church of Elkhart Introduces Prayer Tent Ministry
Greetings from your brothers and sisters here in Elkhart. I want to share with you what the Lord is doing in one of our areas of ministry. In an attempt to become more engaged in our community, we established a new ministry that accomplishes face-to-face contact with people in our community. This outreach also allows us to minister to people's needs and build relationships. It gives us an open window to share Christ with them. This ministry has had a tremendous impact both in the community and on our church's volunteers.
Let me explain how this ministry works. FBCE has purchased a ten-by-ten canopy and four display signs. We set up the canopy next to the road that passes our church and place signs on both sides of our driveway. Two of the signs ask: "Need Prayer?" and two say, "Stop Here."
The beauty of this ministry is that God brings people to us. We bring lawn chairs and a cooler, and then we wait. Every person that pulls in for prayer is someone God has been working on before they get to us. One statement that is shared with us almost every time is: "I have been passing here for several weeks, thinking I should stop, but today something told me to stop." We have had the privilege to pray with dozens of people since starting this ministry in August of 2022. Prayer for health, prodigal children, suicide, jobs, housing, grief, loss, and more. This time for prayer opens the conversation up to where their relationship is with Christ. And so we ask, "Do you know Jesus Christ?" To date, five people have accepted Christ as their personal Savior under our prayer tent.
As the weather began to change, we determined that we wanted to continue the ministry even in the colder months. We looked at several possibilities but found none that were satisfactory. Finally, we decided to park our vehicles next to the highway, sit in our warm cars, and see if anyone would stop. Praise the Lord! They continue to stop! We are now beginning to see repeat pull-ins, and relationships are being built with these people. We have found that consistency has been crucial. People now look for us on Friday afternoons! Currently, we plan to set up during Goshen, IN, First Fridays city festival, and we're exploring taking this ministry on the road and are looking at possibly setting up in parking lots, parks, festivals, and other public gatherings.
We are always looking for workers and are open to anyone who would like to check out how this ministry works. You would always be welcome to visit, sit with us, and experience what this ministry is all about.
Serving Christ with you,
Rev. Dan Herendeen
