"My first year in ministry has been such a blessing and the explosion of Christ has been indescribable to be a part of."
Stephen has just completed his first year of ministry. Read how the Lord has been mightily working in his youth group at Grace Community Church of Winchester, VA.
The Lord has done amazing things! We've seen over 20 students give their lives to Christ, get baptized, and/or begin our discipleship program. We will be taking students on our church's first international mission trip (1st for students that is). We will be going to Lima Peru in late July. This will take place after we take our largest group we've ever taken to conference.
Last year’s conference was a massive catalyst for us! We brought over 23 kids who had never been before! It charged the kids up and created a momentum that we have ridden this entire year. We came back and started baptizing kids and getting them plugged in and directing their passion toward Christ. It was awesome!!
The “Invisible Children” film moved our kids to such a degree that we will be going on our church's first international mission trip for youth. We began making plans with Mt. Olive Brethren church to visit the Brethren site in Lima, Peru. But we found that we both had so much interest that we couldn’t team up together. With our group having 10 and Mt. Olive’s having 11, our combined team was too large. How awesome is that! (To have a mission team too large!) Our district is growing closer and closer which is awesome! I've met Sara Moore and Heather Myers - it is such a blessing to have fellow youth leaders in your cell phone! Although I made great contacts with them and am excited to try again each year, this year our youth group will be going through a missional organization called “Christ for the City International”. We will be ministering in Lima, Peru July 26 – August 4.
We knew that conference was going to be a catalyst again this year, so we prepared for the kids to come back on fire again. We didn't want them to return to feel like conference was a great experience, but wonder “now what”?
We use one-on-one discipleship booklets to guide the students through discipleship but the biggest affect it has had is on relationships. We are a relationship ministry so we don't focus on events as much as we do on leaders taking time with students. The one-on-one interaction creates an intimacy between the leader and student that allows questions and growth where a group can sometimes hinder it. We create all of our own curriculum and we meet together as leaders to pray and seek the Lord to direct our ministry for the semester.
We've trained the upperclassmen to be leaders for the younger ones. We've begun leadership training and we’ve created projects for them. This has allowed us to combine our youth group for grades 6 - 12. The result has been peer education which is the most powerful and affective type of learning. No matter how young a leader is, if they aren't in high school they are "too old."
Training youth leaders to have a heart for others, allowing them to teach, and encouraging them to reach out and guide their friends has revolutionized our group! Apathy has been abolished and love and energy has replaced it! I've allowed students to plan and organize our youth group meetings on a Wednesday and to plan and organize hangouts and fundraisers. They are taking it on with enthusiasm and passion!!
Our main success, honestly, has come from the training of Mike Wood's. He makes himself available and supports the youth in a way that never puts us on an island. Mike is always teaching, always training, always preparing - so I take what I learn and follow his example.
My first year in ministry has been such a blessing and the explosion of Christ has been indescribable to be a part of. Without Mike's challenges and guidance, we would not have been able to handle what God did in our ministry this year.
We are bringing a bigger group to conference this year and I'm struggling to find a bus big enough to fit our kids! (What a great struggle!) I am so excited about conference! I have been dreaming up ideas and wanting to get involved since last year.
