On Sunday, June 13th, the congregation at Smithville Brethren Church held a commissioning service for Andrew and Sarah McGinnis and their daughter. The McGinnis family was preparing to leave the United States in July and head across the ocean to Cameroon, Africa where they will work with Wycliffe Bible Translators as a chaplain and teacher for missionary kids.
Pastor Art Carr led the service through the context of scripture helping those in the church to recognize that while not everyone is sent to far-off places, we are all sent to our community. We are also told that as we follow God’s call we will be a blessing to others around us. Pastor Art noted that Andrew and Sarah are embarking on a grand adventure, however, the congregation is part of that adventure as they continue to keep a connection open and be of encouragement as often as possible. The McGinnis family are in fact following Christ’s command to “GO” but they won’t be going alone. The prayers and love of the people go with them and the Father himself goes before.
The couple spoke of all the focused packing still ahead and the work to be done. They also spoke about getting in those last moment important things, like walks in the local park, dinners with friends and family, and pizza at their favorite restaurant.
We were able to catch up to Andrew and Sarah a few weeks before they left to hear a little more about their call and the work before them, as well as their hopes and dreams for the journey. Our hope is that the McGinnis family and other Brethren already serving with various organizations around the world will be wonderful resources to Brethren "back home."

Listen to their story and let us know how we can serve you as God calls you into the world. Whether the local community, planting a new church in a new town, or in another country we’re here to help people just like you make a difference for Christ and his kingdom!
