Like many countries, the last year has been challenging for your partners in India. The initial wave of COVID-19 was short and uneventful. Then, however, the government closed businesses, schools, churches, and temples. The mandate forced the Brethren School for Children/ Orphanage to close and send the kids to live with whatever relatives they could find. Nirmala dedicated herself to keeping track of the children as much as possible, sending food, supplies, and sometimes funds to help the struggling families. Unfortunately, lockdowns also resulted in widespread hunger and increased poverty, fueling further civil unrest and persecution of Christians in many regions.
The quarantine eventually lifted to some degree, allowing churches and ministries to resume at limited capacity and some ministry to resume. The government continued to keep an eye on the crisis but held many services, like schools closed or virtual.
In April, the Rev. Dr. Prasanth Kumar, founder of the Brethren Church in India, fell ill. After a long battle, he was taken home to his heavenly reward. His passing while cause for celebration was felt keenly by his wife Nirmala, the family, and the many pastors and leaders he mentored over the years. Hundreds of people attended the services of this fantastic minister of the faith that many called Nana (Telegu for father.)
After the funeral, the country faced a second wave of COVID, which swept over the regions with devastating effects. Those of us who watched the news remembered seeing hospitals overwhelmed with critically ill patients. Many desperate for help resorted to the black market for medicine and oxygen. It was heartbreaking!
During this time, the Kumar family was dealt a second blow with the passing of Latha Kumar's mother in another district. Because of the quarantine, they could not attend her funeral, which deepened the sense of loss and depression.
Like dawn peeking over the horizon, the wave finally subsided. Eventually, the ministry returned to in-person gatherings at reduced capacities. Churches everywhere also continue to broadcast services over YouTube and Facebook to bring words of hope and life.
On July 14th, another spark of joy in the gloom occurred as Sudhir, Latha, and the Kumar family celebrated the wedding of the oldest daughter Sherill to Ranjith Revelation. What a pleasure to celebrate new connections and increase to the family even as we let go of dearly loved ones. Shortly after the wedding, Sherill also celebrated graduation with her master's degree.
Just as exciting, many of the pastors gathered together to share in all that has happened over the year. They described tremendous hardship felt by the people. Unfortunately, several were no longer there, having passed away after contracting the virus. Though there was grief and heartache, the group also shared how God had lifted the church. They discussed the joy they felt in providing comfort and food to those without such. Then they spent several hours in prayer and thanksgiving to Jesus for all he continues to do. Hearts dancing at the very mention of the almighty’s name!

Although nothing is as it once was, the ministry is still happening, lives are still being changed. Nirmala continues to track children and many in the churches who are blessed and able to reach out with food, medicine, and supplies to whomever they can help. The result is hope and comfort in Jesus' name. Even though we may be uncertain of the world in which we live, we can be confident of the love of God for his people. God continues to prove he holds the past, present, and future in his hands. So, even as we mourn and struggle, we also find many reasons to rejoice.
