Brothers and Sisters, it is with the deepest and most profound regret that I must inform you of the passing of one of the most faithful men I have ever known, Rev. Dr. K. Prasanth Kumar.
Prasanth Kumar served the Brethren Church with distinction. In 1969, after completing seminary at Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, Ohio, He and his wife Nirmala moved back to his hometown of Rajahmundry, located in the Andhra Pradesh state of India. There he began planting churches, fulfilling the role of Director of the Brethren Mission in India for over 50 years.
Prasanth's focus has always been on raising people out of poverty by attending to their many physical and spiritual needs. Like the Apostle Paul, Prasanth embraced the apostolic call to "go and make disciples," which led to the transformation of thousands of lives throughout the region, in and through the Lord Jesus Christ that continues to reverberate around the globe to this very day. Prasanth believed in raising leaders and churches everywhere along the way. Because of his focus on leadership, discipleship, and his sacrificial life of service, there are between 10,000 and 15,000 baptized believers living, working, and ministering in Andhra Pradesh today. The Kumar's ministry has planted hundreds of churches across the region, from small rural villages to the cities of Visakhapatnam and Rajahmundry.
During his ministry, Prasanth faced many different forms of opposition. He often took medicines and necessities and the Gospel into the Jungles to remote villages facing tigers, snakes, malaria, and even bandits. More importantly, were the spiritual oppositions. Let us not forget that any time a servant of the Lord stands in the gap for Christ, Satan is sure to be unhappy and use various methods to dissuade, discourage, and distance God's people from those whom he has sent them to reach. Nonetheless, Prasanth's determination and devotion to deliver God's message of love for his people always won over his fear.
Many in the Brethren Church have worked alongside Prasanth in prayer and love over the years, including dozens of the Brethren Missionary Board members. Although I am the most recent to sit in the role of Coordinator of Brethren Global Partners, there have been many exceptional leaders over the years to have had the great privilege to serve alongside Prasanth. Those leaders include Virgil Ingraham, Jim Black Sr., Reilly Smith, and former Executive Director Ken Hunn. Together with Prasanth, Nirmala, and the Kumar children, these fantastic leaders forged a path in India in unprecedented fashion, proclaiming the good news of life, love, and relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ's death on the cross.
Prasanth's body may now be at rest, but his spirit is in glad communion with the Father in heaven where he has no doubt heard the words all of God's faithful children long to hear. "Well done my good and faithful servant, enter into your master's happiness. Rest now and know I am pleased."
