South Africa has always been a land filled with plenty and with poverty. A place where joy can be found riding waves of frustration and pain, like a surfer along with the country's many beaches. A place of possibility masking an underlying problem waiting to explode!
In the summer of 2021, the pressure felt by many in the population came to a boiling point. The unrest began on July 8 when former President Jacob Zuma started serving a 15-month prison sentence for contempt of court. Not only did this event launch a cry from so many living in poverty, but it also set fire to widespread civil unrest.
The unrest was largely limited to the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces, which together account for nearly 50% of South Africa’s GDP. An estimated 10 billion rand ($680 million) was lost in stolen goods, burned trucks and destroyed property. Even though much has been lost, hope remains!
Brethren pastors in the city of Durbin worked together along with others in the community to help clean up. More than that, they have begun to reach out to the people offering grace and love, where rage once existed.
Several pastors in the Embo brought area leaders and ministries together to help, including both those who participated in the looting and those whose businesses were damaged or destroyed. Together they are looking to find common ground and reconciliation. They spent over a week in concerted prayer, cleanup, and revival meetings to begin the healing process. A complicated process, to be sure, however, with spirit-leading, all things are possible.
Please keep your Brethren partners in South Africa in prayer as they continue to move forward, rebuilding businesses and ministries from the ground up. Pray for genuine reconciliation among the many people, including the government. Pray for revival as they continue to lift you before the Lord daily as we continue to work through our own time of need and discontent.
