As you may know, the last few years have been hard on Breathitt County, Kentucky's residents, businesses, and non-profits. In the Spring of 2021, just
months after being allowed to reopen from the pandemic, they were hit with a 100-year flood. The waters rose and flooded the school and residential buildings all over campus. However, such floods have occurred in the past, and students, parents, teachers, and busloads of volunteers, rolled up their sleeves and got to work. The work was hard, but the teams were determined to see the school up and running at maximum capacity. Fall 2022 was expected to be an incredible year!
Then in the summer of 2022, as our General Conference ended, a massive storm swept through the area, creating what many call a thousand-year
storm. The waters rose to levels never before seen, prompting evacuation orders throughout the region. Unfortunately, the waters rose so fast that
many throughout the county needed rescue, and a few lost their lives. At Riverside School and Drushal Memorial Brethren Church, the entire complex was flooded to the second level of every building. The devastation was enormous!
Over the last year, the school staff and Board of Directors have been working with county officials to buy or lease a school building just north of the
property. The school is relatively modern and located much higher than those on the original campus. Not only will this location provide safety from future storms, but it will also allow the expansion of classes and classroom space. This will continue to educate students throughout the region who often must travel a fair distance.
The Board bid the building’s asking price of $350,000, and the Breathitt County Officials accepted it. This marks the end of a ton of prayer and the
beginning of a new chapter for the school and the community moving forward. The current property will continue to be used for community events,
staff residents, administration offices, etc. There is much to be done! If you or your church want to know more or bring a work team, there is still much to do. Contact Meg Asher, Principal of Riverside Christian School, at asher.meg@riversidechristian.org.
