Since its creation, the Brethren Church has been part of a diverse and interconnected family spanning the globe. From India to South Africa, the Asian continent, and South America, wherever God called, Brethren have answered. One of our ministry partners answering God’s call is the Good Shepherd Orphanage in Puerto Maldonado, Peru, and its founders, Italo and Rebecca Abuid. Together, they have served faithfully, developing a ministry on the edge of the jungle, helping children find peace and a sense of home - even rescuing some from the grip of human trafficking. Following a five-year battle with cancer, Italo was called home in January 2023. Although he is gone from the earth, he leaves a powerful legacy of sacrifice, love, and ministry.
Italo Abuid was born August 3, 1948, in Puerto Maldonado, Peru. He went to school near his family ranch by the river in the jungle with his five siblings. He grew up in a Catholic family, but when he was very young he heard the Gospel from Evangelical missionaries. He moved to the United States at 18 years of age. He worked in the restaurant business, starting at the bottom and working his way up to management in luxury restaurants in Sarasota, Florida, and becoming an excellent cook.
During this time, Italo came to the Lord and met Rebecca in 1991. They were married the following year. Italo and Rebecca were privileged to meet Daniel and Kathy (Aspinall) Rosales and began attending their Hispanic Brethren Church, where Italo felt very much at home. Daniel took a genuine interest in discipling Italo, sparking his interest in ministry, teaching him how to prepare messages, and allowing him to participate in church. Others who helped and mentored Italo were David Stone, Ken Solomon, Tim Solomon, and Rob and Jane Byler. In October of 1999, Italo and Rebecca were blessed by the birth of their son, Italo David. Shortly after, Italo began his ministry at the Sarasota Hispanic Brethren Church in early 2000. Although lacking in formal training, his congregation dearly loved him and appreciated his caring pastoral gift.
Because of recurring battles with cancer, Italo returned to Peru for lung surgery. When he returned to the United States, he was informed that he could not stay in the country due to changes brought about by Homeland Security following the events of 9/11. Although not expected or planned, this became the impetus for the Abuids' move to Peru, something they had been praying about and wanting for a long time.
In Peru, Italo became the pastor of the Lima Brethren Church. Eventually, his vision of buying property and developing a children's home in the jungle came to pass. The ground was broken in 2006, with incredible support shown by many of the Brethren churches and individuals. In 2007, Italo was ordained to the ministry. The first children were brought in once the home was completed in 2011. They have had up to 12 children at home at one time. There are three precious young teens that Rebecca and her son David care for now: Maria, Carlos, and Kevin. Maria and Carlos have been part of the family for 11 years, and Kevin for 6.
On January 1, 2017, the Brethren Church of Puerto Maldonado was formed. Italo and Pastor Segundo were the first pastor and co-pastor. Over the years, Italo had become a man of deep prayer. However, Italo's cancer returned during the past five years, creating more challenges for the Abuid family. At this time, David, now studying in Lima, put his studies on hold to accompany his Dad to his medical treatments while Rebecca had her hands entirely full on her own at home. In 2019, by the grace of God, Italo survived a diabetic coma, a stroke, and later a severe case of COVID-19. God granted Italo the blessing of getting to see his son graduate from Christian college. Through this time, Italo and Rebecca tried to keep their eyes on the Lord and were thankful for so many friends' constant prayers and financial support.

After many years of fighting cancer, Italo passed into God's presence in Lima on January 14, 2023. Those who knew him best would agree that Italo "fought the good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith." (2 Tim. 4:7). We ask that you continue to pray for Rebecca and their son David as they work hard to continue the legacy of the ministry in Puerto Maldonado. David has assumed much of his father’s ministry roles while his mother and Pastor Segundo continue to advise and guide him.
