It’s been five years since the day that I heard the word church planting. It was a time in my life where I was frustrated with the direction of mainline & evangelical churches and the pace, change, and effectiveness that the local church had in its community.
In short, it simply wasn’t taking enough risk.
My wife and I, through the last five years, have prayed and listened to what Jesus was dong in our lives, in our city and ultimately in our great state of California. We were seeing people ask questions about form and structure of their local congregations.
A lot of local churches do a great job at being effective, but there was always this question and concern with local established churches: are they taking enough risk?
My Brethren background is one where we hold the value of communal interpretation. This is simply reading scripture together in a group and seeing how we each see, approach and interpret, with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, the inspired Word of God. It is each Jesus’ follower’s reasonability to wrestle, doubt, question, critique and interpret scripture. Yes, Jesus is okay with this. We are no longer bound to having just one person (historically a male human) enter the Holy of Holies and hear from the Word of God.
This might be seen as risky. But we want to go further…
Fast forward five years and our original plans have changed. We had a tremendous vision to have ZAO spread throughout the state of California.
Let me give you a picture…
Go with me here…
Imagine the state of California, but it’s black – pitch black. From the darkness emerges these little lights. Some are clustered together; some are spread apart. Some are brighter, and some are lighter. These lights represent the expressions of church that we wanted to start. See, in the beginning, we thought that these lights would be just Bible studies, hang out times and shared meals but that doesn’t seem to be what has happened in 5 years.
From the beginning, the purpose for ZAO Church was to have that complete life in Christ (that’s what ZAO means in the Greek), but a byproduct from these relationships is new life was sprouting out, and it did not look like what we initially thought. We had folks start to get ideas about starting blogs, podcasts, neighborhood outreach and for profit business.
This soon became more unique that we first thought. These “expression” reflected the heart of the people who want to start something new, to take a small or large risk, and do the thing that Jesus has called them to do.
To sum this up, ZAO Church is made up of all these different “expressions, ” and these are the lights in the arkness. This is where Jesus gets to show up in our relationships, communities, and ideas and them become bigger than we could have imagined. There is now a place on the site called ZAO Expressions. These are the new starts that reflect the heart of the people and teams leading them. They are all vastly different, dynamic, unique and we want to add more!
How do you know if this is you?
Here are some questions to ask to see of Jesus is doing something:
What is something that you’d always want to do?
Have you ever wanted to start a business?
Have you ever wanted to start a service to help others?
Are you crafty and like to build things?
Are you artistic or musical?
Does having people in your house and talking about the Bible sound good?
Do you like to read books?
Do you like the wilderness?
Are you good at underwater basket weaving?
There are so many ways that church can be “the church”. We are only limited by our ability to relinquish control and do the thing Jesus called us to do. The reality is Jesus does not call us in to a place of comfort and security, instead, it is about the journey and trials of becoming the people Jesus wants us to be.

It will take risk, maybe not that much, but it will help get to know ourselves, our savior and our God of gods deeper and more authentic!
Who wants to go?!?!
