In 2020, churches found their doors closed to regular worship due to Covid-19. Many gathered in their cars in parking lots, or around TVs or digital devices to worship and receive God's message of hope. Maurertown Brethren Church initially began streaming services on YouTube, but later found Facebook was a better platform for sharing Sunday Praise and Worship services. Looking back over the last two years, Maurertown Brethren Church stands in amazement when reflecting on how the Holy Spirit used the church's Facebook page to praise and worship God with others not only in the surrounding community but in other countries as well!
Pastor Todd Crowder, three adults, and three youth comprised the team responsible for producing and publishing the worship service each week. As online attendance grew, the team looked for ways to expand the audience of the service from local viewers to a broader, possibly even worldwide audience. As the team researched ways to increase the impact of the worship services, the pastor noticed a "Boost" button on the church's Facebook page. Clicking the button and choosing a $5 option, the number of people viewing the services immediately doubled! What would happen if he increased the boost to $20? More than 1000 people were reached. Church members were excited to hear about the response to this evangelistic effort! Now the church decided to increase the "Boost" to $70. Wow! That worship service received 19,000 views! That was exciting, but how many people were watching the entire service? Pastor Todd reflected, "To be honest, I had no clue what I was doing in 2020 but when you see your reach going from 200 views to 19,000 views you know you did a good thing! We learned as we went along."
In an effort to spread the Gospel beyond the United States, the worship service was boosted to South Africa, Peru, Argentina, and Chile - specifically where the Brethren Church is present. The average viewer demographic was from the 13-17 year age group, and views were beginning to be as many as 94,000. In February 2022, when things escalated in Ukraine, services were boosted there. The first week's views jumped to 298,000! People from all age groups were engaging, and there was an even split between men and women viewers. A suggestion was made to send the services to Poland, as this was where many refugees were fleeing. However, when this was attempted, engagement in the services declined. Facebook had warned the area was getting too large for the amount boosted.
Excitement still grew as the congregation began to realize that people around the world were worshipping right along with them. While singing, praying, and hearing God's Word, they now had people around the world sitting next to them. One gentleman realized that when he spoke it was picked up by the sound system and others around the world would also hear him. The congregation wanted to help pay for boosting the service videos, and through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, additional financial gifts and funding were designated for the evangelistic outreach. This little church in Virginia is now sending the gospel of Jesus Christ to people who want and need to hear the Good News! All praise be to God!
As of April 24, 2022, the Maurertown Brethren Church " Easter Shadow Plot" set a new record of 200,963 people were reached and with 95,011 ThruPlays (a Thruplay is a view lasting longer than 16 minutes). When it was run with the worship service in its entirety the following week it got an additional 55,000 ThruPlays. The top three countries to view this service (in order): were Argentina, Peru, and Ukraine. From the first pre-taped service (in March 2020) to the present, the worship services that are published on the church's Facebook page have continued to evolve. By using Facebook, and specifically "boosting" Sunday morning worship services, Maurertown Brethren has found a new way to send the light of Jesus. What a blessing!
