Since 2003, our brother Bob Shannon served faithfully as the pastor of the First Brethren Church of Gratis in Southwest Ohio. By the end of 2020, Bob decided it was time to retire. Following his resignation, the leadership at Gratis realized that this transition was an enormous opportunity for the growth of their church. After prayer and discussion, church leadership concluded that God was leading them to call a Brethren Intentional Interim to be their next pastor.
On July 4, 2021, I (Lynn Mercer) began as a part-time Intentional Interim Pastor for FBC Gratis, and I would help to oversee this transition process. I have been a pastor and elder in The Brethren Church for more than 40 years. I’ve done training with Interim Pastor Ministries (IPM) specifically to help churches navigate pastoral changes and help them come out healthier and stronger on the other side.
But of course, having an intentional interim pastor was only part of the recipe. First Brethren Church of Gratis also enlisted the help of Gary Diehl, long-time Church Vitality Director at The Brethren Church National Office. In his retirement, Gary serves as a church and leadership consultant, has been trained by IPM, and is certified in Natural Church Development (NCD). Gary coached me throughout the process. We had a 1-hour coaching time about once a month.
The congregation did their share too! I met regularly with the Gratis “Transition Team” to make sure that everyone was on the same page and moving in the same direction. We identified things we were willing to change and believed the Lord was calling us to change. Any change, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is HUGE! That first little change toward health makes it easier to make the more difficult changes later. The Prayer Team kept us covered in prayer as we moved through this process. We also prayed about how to connect with people in the community and meet their needs.
Everyone in the church was invited to complete a Church Health Survey from NC. I conducted listening interviews with all those in the congregation who were willing to answer questions about the local church. The listening interviews - along with the NCD tools - helped us assess the congregation's strengths and areas of weakness.
Eventually, we had a four-member ‘Pastoral Search Committee’ who did an excellent job receiving and processing the resumes, then interviewing the candidate they believed God wanted them to interview. It was a lot of work, but it was a lot of fun! Lasting relationships were built. We heard each other’s hearts. We grew to trust each other. Fellowship happened. Community was built. The Lord brought unity to us.
After 20 months of serving as the Intentional Interim Pastor of First Brethren Church of Gratis, I was blessed to pass the baton to Rev. Bill Childress on March 26, 2023. On that Sunday, I reminded those in attendance what we learned about consensus and working together through this interim process. When you get frustrated with each other, “Just give ‘em time, be patient with ‘em, and model for ‘em what a healthy conversation can look like.”
Respectfully submitted,
Lynn Mercer
