New Rhythms and Rituals for 2023
As the end of 2022 quickly approaches, I’m sure you, like me, are reflecting on this year and making plans for next year. I’ve never had much luck following through with my big, lofty New Year’s Resolutions; I typically work at it for a week if I’m lucky, miss a day of that workout or habit I promised to stick with, get discouraged and embarrassed, and give up altogether before the first month is up. I don’t know about you, but I hate disappointment being the start of my year.
That’s why a few years ago, I started a new rhythm. Instead of promising that I would be good enough to form some new habit or ritual in my life that would magically make me happier, I decided to ask the Lord to help me dig deeper. I started asking myself and God this question: What kind of person do I want to be in this new year? Then I just listened. I listened to myself, letting myself be free to say things like, “You know, I’ve always wanted to be more bold; I don’t want fear to rule my life.” And I listened to the Lord say, “I want that for you too; I want you to be able to work through the fear and not let it hold you back. I also want you to learn to be trusting, I want you to trust me and those I’ve put in your life.”
Together, the Lord and I have come up with a different kind of New Year’s Resolution. Instead of feeling like a failure if I don’t succeed in the first week, I know that I have the entire year to allow God to change my heart. I know that even if there’s just one day when I do something bold, or one time when I trust God when I’m scared, I have completed my goal of being more bold and more trusting than I was before. Then, at the end of the year, I get to look back on the list and see the areas I’ve grown in, and see how the Lord has made me into the person we want me to be.
2023 will mark the fourth year that I’ve done this, and I’m going to stick with it. It has been the most life-giving way to start and end these last three years. If you are secretly dreading the New Year’s Resolution trend that’s about to start, and you want to do something new, I invite you into this new rhythm.
