The Southeast Region of The Brethren Church held its Summer Camp at Potomac Park in Falling Waters, West Virginia (not too far from Hagerstown, Maryland). The theme for the week at camp was “Who Am I?” The focus for the week was who God calls us to be, how He loves us, is always with us, and is always making things - including us - new. We learned that because God is creative, we can be too!
Over 60 campers ranging from just finishing third grade through high school seniors were together at camp. Worship was combined and led by Caedmon Reams and his youth band from Compass Community Church. The rest of the time, campers were split up by age group. The days were filled with small groups where deeper discussions were held, and the campers could connect with each other. Potomac Park contains plenty of activities appropriate for younger campers too, so even our little ones could navigate a whole week of camp without becoming homesick.
Each evening ended for both groups with time around the campfire with songs and devotions. Speakers each evening shared testimonies of how God had presented Himself to them through their own life experiences. Seeing campers worship God deeply each day and begin new friendships within our region was rich, sweet, and rewarding. Laura Waldron of Mount Olive Brethren Church (McGaheysville, VA) and Morgan Sterling of The Gathering Church (Grottoes, VA) were camp week's Littles Camp leaders.
Avery Zimmerman and Nancy Zimmerman of Mount Olive and Drew Fox, Ronnie Helton, Kelly Helton, and Kim Butner of First Brethren Church of Oak Hill (Oak Hill, WV). Served as camp's middle-grades leaders. The High School leaders were Chyann Mackey, Shelby Morris, Conner Mackey, David Miller, and Payton Gayre of Mount Olive and Shane Laymen of St. James Brethren Church of Fairplay, MD.
You may notice many of our leaders this year are young leaders who grew up going to camp, Engage Conference, and Brethren Academy. It is amazing to see how God is using our local churches and these events to raise our young leaders in the denomination. If you wonder if camp, Conference and Brethren Academy make a difference… they do!
We are already making plans for next summer!
