On Dec. 11, 2022, Liberty Brethren Church of Quicksburg, VA started off its Christmas Season by helping Hurricane Ian victims in Fort Myers, Florida. Liberty had a group of 7 people along with their friends, Carter and Lou. Lou is from Mt Olive Brethren Church. In our group, we had four youth members, Emily, Christopher, Gabriel, and Brianna. As we arrived in Fort Myers Florida, we were greeted by Samaritan's Purse.
We stayed in a local church and were given jobs each day. As a team, we tore out wet walls, removed damaged floors, removed debris, gutted bathrooms and kitchens, tore out damaged appliances, and salvaged personal belongings in seven homes that were damaged by the flood waters. Many homeowners lived in doublewide trailers. Their homes had so much flood damage they had been sleeping on their porches for months.
After we completed each home, we presented the owners with a beautiful Billy Graham Bible. Presenting the Bible was one of the most special moments. Each volunteer signed the Bible with a special message for the homeowners. This was a moment of reflection, and a moment to share the Gospel. Many owners shed tears and shared smiles and gratitude for the work we did. As a team, we shared many special moments and absolutely loved our time together as we worked for the Lord.
One memory we will never forget was our last evening meal together, we shared this meal with one of the families we helped. We gathered around a large table with our team and the homeowners. We spent the evening laughing, eating, and sharing stories of the love of Christ. One of the homeowners named Sue, stood up to tell the larger group how much she appreciated our help and how loved she felt. She said, "I just want to thank all of you, for everything you do."
We are so thankful to Liberty Brethren Church for its support, love, and prayers as we traveled to Fort Myers. God showed us his mercy and His love every day. We could feel his presence, and when we looked into the eyes of the homeowners we could see His love for them.
I will leave you with a message we received from a Fort Myers resident at the grocery store, she said, "I love what you do, I love who you are, and I love whose you are."
This message touched my heart and I hope it touches your heart too.
